About the Marine industry in Victoria

Victoria has a long and proud marine industry tradition that continues to this day, with a large and diverse boat building industry and some of the foremost marine accessory and component manufacturers in the world.

The BIA is the peak recreational boating body in Victoria, representing over 90% of the vibrant and growing recreational boating industry. Members include manufacturing, wholesale, retail and service businesses covering boat builders, boat dealers, engine distributors, yacht brokers, trailer manufacturers, ships chandlers, hire and charter boat operators, marinas, shipwrights, and mechanical and electrical engineers. Through BIA, its members share a common dedication to the continuous improvement and regulation of the Boating Industry.

BIA Victoria owns and operates the Melbourne Boat Show at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre and the Docklands Boat Show in Melbourne’s prestigious and rapidly developing Docklands precinct. The Club Marine Melbourne Boat Show is the biggest indoor boat show in the southern hemisphere. The Docklands Boat Show has become established as Melbourne’s big-boat show, with exhibitor numbers doubling in the past two years. Attendances and sales are also surging, largely because of the burgeoning development of thousands of wet berths in several new marinas around Melbourne, which will see wet berths double in number by the end of the decade.

Shipmate Pocket Directory, is the boaters guide to marine trades and services on Port Phillip and Westernport. this free, 112 page, pocket guide now in its 4th edition, provides free listings to trades and service providers and is a valuable resource for the Victorian boating community. As well as marine trades and services, Shipmate includes emergency contacts, yacht clubs, marinas, marine organisations, tide tables and even dockside restaurants and cafes.
