The theme for this year’s ASMEX conference is “Building a Business for the Future” and as such will have speakers covering key business related topics such as marketing in a new era, building sustainable export markets, where are the opportunities, understanding and finding the best distribution channels, driving sales, forecasting and finance and the critical importance of building relationships and networking to achieve outcomes. The Asia Pacific region is increasingly the focus for many global businesses, where does Australia fit in the mix?

 

Martin Redmayne, Chairman and Editor-In-Chief of The Superyacht Group, returns as conference MC. The conference will be held at the five-star InterContinental Hotel, Sanctuary Cove Queensland and runs over two days, 17 – 18 May including a welcome function, Monday 16 May, the prestigious Australian Marine Industry Awards Gala Dinner, Tuesday 17 May and conference closing drinks, Wednesday 18 May.

Senator the Hon. Richard Colbeck – Minister for Tourism and International Education, and Minister Assisting the Minister for Trade and Investment 

Portrait - head and shouldersRichard Colbeck is a Liberal Senator for Tasmania and Minister for Tourism and International Education, and Minister Assisting the Minister for Trade and Investment. Prior to entering politics in 2002, Senator Colbeck worked in the construction industry for more than two decades, starting as an apprentice and going on to own his own business. He served as an Alderman on the Devonport City Council, a Director of the Tasmanian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and President of the Devonport Chamber of Commerce and Industry. He has previously held a number of parliamentary roles in both government and opposition including Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Agriculture with responsibility for fisheries and forestry, and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Finance and Administration. Senator Colbeck is a proud Tasmanian and lives in Devonport with his wife Gaylene, they have three children.

 

Andy Treadwell – Managing Director, Singapore  & Thailand Yacht Show

headshot from googleA natural leader and business developer, Andy was the founder and CEO of Informa Plc’s Sports & Leisure Group (ISLG), working with a number of the world’s most prestigious yachting and sporting industry events over the last five years. Informa is one of the world’s leading conference and exhibition businesses, organising some 8,000 events in 46 countries and employing around 7,000 people. ISLG encompassed all the sports (ISG) and yachting (IYG) businesses in the company, including industry-­leading events such as the Monaco Yacht Show, the Singapore Yacht Show, the Superyacht Cup Regattas, the Abu Dhabi Yacht Show, the Phuket International Boat Show, the International Sports Event Management Conference, Future Sponsorship and the World Yacht Racing Forum. Andy’s entrepreneurial instincts led him to organise an MBO of part of the group from Informa in 2012. He is now based in Singapore, busy developing a portfolio of events in the leisure marine and sports sectors, focusing on Asia while the relative economic downturn in Europe continues. The Singapore Yacht Show has quickly become the region’s largest and most important boating showcase.

 

Ed Slack – IBI Editor

Ed Slack updated headshot web largeEd Slack is the longstanding editor of IBI (International Boat Industry) magazine and its sister website IBInews.com, the world’s leading business title for the leisure marine sector. Since 2008 he has also been managing editor of IPC Media’s B2B marine portfolio that includes the Award-winning Superyacht Business magazine.

Prior to joining the IBI, Ed worked as a journalist on national newspapers.

 

 

Eduardo Read – President, Read Marine Group

EduardoEduardo Read was born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic in October 1958 as a 3rd generation dentist and 2nd generation of avid fisherman’s. Since very young was passionate with fishing and boats what led him in 2000 to start his career in Yacht Sales representing Riviera, Viking and Princess Yachts for the island.
He has been fishing all around the world with more than 7 seasons in the great barrier reef, he is commodore of the National Naval Auxiliaries, a volunteer corp that works in search and rescue, environmental protection, vessel inspection and safe navigation courses.

 

Justin Parer – Managing Director, BSE Maritime Solutions

Justin head shotJustin is happy to be described as an entrepreneur and more reluctantly as an accountant. Upon completion of his B.Com at Bond University (1993) Justin worked for Ernst and Young and completed his training to become a Chartered Accountant. After being exposed to the Maritime industry in 1999 during the administration of the Keppel Cairncross Dry dock, he gladly left accounting in 2000 and purchased Brisbane Slipways and Engineering. Having seen accountants destroy maritime businesses in the past, he has been developing his broader business skills ever since and the completion of the Owners President Managers course at Harvard University in 2007 was part of this journey. With nearly 20 years experience in the industry Justin has faced his share of challenges but is extremely proud of BSE and the many opportunities ahead.

 

Marcus Blackmore – Chairman of Blackmores Ltd

Marcus Blackmore – Chairman BlackmoresMarcus Blackmore was born in Queensland in 1945, received his high school education at Church of England Grammar School in Brisbane, and later gained a Naturopathic Diploma from the NSW College of Naturopathic Sciences.  He served from 1969-1971 in the Australian Army with service in Vietnam.  Marcus is also a member of Harvard Business School Alumni. His recreational interests are yacht racing and flying and he holds a private helicopter licence.

Marcus is currently the Chairman of Blackmores Ltd, a public company employing over 900 people in Australia, New Zealand and Asia.  The company markets the premium brand of vitamin and herbal products under the ‘Blackmores’ and ‘BioCeuticals’ labels and is widely recognised for its ethical practices and its treatment of staff.

 

Martin Baum – Managing Director of Pantaenius

Martin new headshotMartin Baum is the Managing Director of the Pantaenius Yacht Group, a position which he has held since 2006. In the traditional family-run company with twelve subsidiaries and its Hamburg headquarters, he is Chairman of the Board of Directors and has specific responsibility for global sales and developments of upcoming markets as well as the overall yacht group’s strategy. His achievements have included notable developments within the Pantaenius group such as the development of a new superyacht team, a major restructuring of the Pantaenius IT department, the implementation of client service program that shortened response times to clients and the creation of Europe’s first online yacht insurance provider.  As an enthusiastic and talented yachtsman since his childhood, he has participated in many long distance races including transatlantic crossings and has extensive experience in cruising all around the world.

 

Mark Richards – CEO Grand Banks and Palm Beach Motor Yachts

Mark_Richards_corporate_headshot_smiling (USE THIS ONE)Mark Richards, ‘Ricko’ amongst friends and the sailing fraternity, is one of Australia’s most renowned sailors, having achieved continued success skippering the late Bob Oatley’s supermaxi Wild Oats XI in the Rolex Sydney Hobart Race. Less well-known perhaps is that behind Richards’ easy-going persona lies the compelling story of a driven, single-minded individual whose passion and out-of-the-box thinking has led to professional and personal triumph, both on and off the water.  Richards’ association with sailing began in earnest as a child and was strengthened at age 17 with the commencement of his boatbuilding apprenticeship, an area that would later see him receive repeat international acclaim for the design of his Palm Beach Motor Yachts; the company he founded in 1995. It is also the arena in which Richards would meet Bob Oatley and see their now legendary friendship form. Not only revered as an accomplished amateur sailor, Mark was a highly talented professional yachtsman, successfully competing internationally prior to establishing Palm Beach Motor Yachts.  A two time World Sailing champion, it was during this time that he competed in the 1991 and 1995 America’s Cups. He would also later lead Australia to victory in the 2003 Admiral’s Cup. Today Richards is a renowned power player in the luxury yacht market where he continues to oversee the expansion of the multimillion dollar Grand Banks Yachts business with the same tenacity, inspired thought and leadership that continually drives his pursuit of perfection.

 

Mick Kinley – CEO, Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA)

Photo - HEAD SHOTMichael (Mick) Kinley was appointed Chief Executive Officer for the Australian Maritime Safety Authority on 27 August 2014. Mick was previously the Deputy Chief Executive Officer and held this position since October 2008.

Mick joined the Australian Maritime Safety Authority in Cairns, as a Marine Surveyor in 1994. Since that time he has gained experience across all of AMSA’s business but most particularly maritime safety and casualty response.

Prior to joining AMSA, Mick had an extensive career with BHP having commenced as an engineer cadet with BHP Transport. He sailed with the BHP fleet before undertaking various shore-based roles including fleet safety instructor and project engineer.

Mick holds an Australian Chief Engineer Class 1 Certificate, a Bachelor of Applied Science, a Bachelor of Engineering and a Graduate Diploma in Legal Studies.

 

Nizar Tagi – General Manager Benetti Asia

Nizar photo 2 small for websiteNizar, a yacht connoisseur worked with some of the most prominent names in the industry, started with George Nicholson-Solidmark France in Cannes and successfully sold numerous pre-owned yachts and new construction projects, where he learned the nuts and bolts of the industry.Before joining Benetti shipyards Nizar was Marina Sales Director of Porto Montenegro, considered by the captains as the best state-of-the-art marina in the world, and before that successfully sold mega yachts with Ocean Independence-Monaco.

 

 

Peter Busfield – Executive Director NZ Marine

Peter Busfield croppedPeter has been in his current or senior leadership roles during a period of sustained growth of the NZ marine industry – including export growth of 300% over the past 10 years to NZ$800 million and an industry providing total turnover of NZ$1.7 billion. Of recent the NZ Marine Export Group, using Peters marketing skills has established New Zealand as a major superyacht destination and refit hub in the South Pacific. The internationally respected NZ Marine Industry Training Organisation boat building apprenticeship programmes have seen over 1000 graduates under his leadership and currently the programme has 450 registered trainees. Prior to joining NZ Marine Peter had a background in business and sales management from Fisher & Paykel and founder of Busfield Marine Ltd, a new boat marketing and brokerage company.

 

Paul Archer – S.A.R.L Arrow Services Monaco

Born in Sydney Paul Archer qualified as a CPA and worked with KPMG for 7 years.  His free time in Australia was spent sailing and he competed in offshore races including many Sydney-Hobarts. Having settled in the UK he continued sailing with participation in many regattas including the infamous 1979 Fastnet Race and many other international blue water classics.   His interest in sailing was not simply confined to racing but also the administration side of the sport with time on the RORC and Cowes Combined Club Committee and finally a term as Rear Commodore of the Royal Thames Yacht Club.  Today he participates in the Mediterranean season racing as a crew member on board the 108ft Wally Open Season. With 40 years experience ranging from Auditing to Finance Director of a Merchant Bank he has specialised in all aspects of Asset and Tax  Management and saw the potential to bring his financial skills and yachting experience and contacts to Super Yacht Management culminating in 1997 with the establishment in Monaco of Arrow Services. Arrow is an Independent Yacht Management company providing family office services for yachting attracting clients from major Trusts, Family Offices, Banks and Law Firms.  Services cover new build construction, yacht management, crew employment and yacht registration.  Seven vessels are currently under construction and pre- build specification review by the ASM project management team covering sizes from 50 ft -90 m. Over the years we have assisted many Australian clients building yachts in Europe and see this number increasing. With head office in Monaco and other offices in the USA and Thailand Paul’s intention is to return to Australia and develop the ARROW business in SE Asia.

 

Roberto Giorgi – Chairman, Fraser Yachts

Roberto_print_2cMr. Giorgi began his career at sea; attending Nautical College and joining the Italian Navy as a Lieutenant before joining the merchant marine where he worked on both passenger liners and cargo vessels. He obtained his Master Mariner qualification in 1974. In 1980 he began his first shore-based role as a ship manager at Amarline. Several years later he joined the newly founded V.Ships and helped grow the company to become the largest ship management company in the world today. He has held various roles within the V.Ships Group including being the Managing Director of V.Ships New York, before returning to Europe to launch the new brand V.Ships Leisure in the cruise sector, as well as running the ship management operation from its Monaco office. From 2005 until the end of 2013 he held the role of President of V.Ships and until the end of 2015 he was the Honorary President before his retirement from VShips. Mr. Giorgi was President of InterManager from 2008-2010, the international trade association for third-party and in-house ship managers, whose members are responsible for some 3,700 ships and more than 200,000 crew members between them. In August 2014 Mr. Giorgi became the Chairman of Fraser Yachts, a company he had been involved with since V.Ships bought it in a joint partnership with Azimut Benetti in 2004.

 

Steve Fisher – Superyacht Specialist Manager, Rivergate Marina and Shipyard

steven Fisher head shotSteve Fisher is the Superyacht Specialist Manager at Rivergate Marina and Shipyard in Brisbane, Australia. He graduated in Science from Griffith University (1978) before working in the dredging industry, the offshore oil and gas industry and finally the Superyacht industry. He holds commercial marine qualifications as a Captain and qualifications as a Yacht Master Instructor. Mr Fisher served as an Infantry Officer with the 8th Battalion Royal Australian Regiment. He was the former General Manager at Rivergate retiring in 2011, agreeing in late 2011 to return to Rivergate in his current role. He has held leadership roles in the Marine Industry for over 30 years and has been involved in the haul out of over 10,000 vessels.

 

Thomas Dammrich- President, National Marine Manufacturers Association

Thom Dammrich - President ICOMIA and President of NMMA USAUnder Thom Dammrich’s leadership at National Marine, the association represents 1,550 marine industry members that produce 80 percent of the recreational boating products currently sold in North America. Most notably, Dammrich has been instrumental in helping unite the industry with the Grow Boating Initiative. From this project, the Discover Boating campaign was refined as an industry-wide effort to promote the boating lifestyle, improve the boating experience and increase participation. The results have been optimized sales of marine products and services, and expanded research on boaters. Dammrich furthers his involvement and commitment to recreational boating interests by serving on several boards such as ICOMIA, IMCI, as well as yachting and fishing councils.
