If you happen to be in Naples, Italy in April this year there is a fair chance you are there for one of the world’s premier yacht racing events, the Americas Cup. Western Australian Company Marine Protection Systems (MPS) will have products as close to the action as you can get without actually racing. The companies unique Maddox anodes have been installed on the hulls of all 6 support catamarans for the race. These vessels are designed and fitted out to provide the closest race viewing experience for VIP’s, media, and race officials.
Head of Race Management David Powys was recently in Perth where he met the team from MPS and discussed the catamarans cathodic protection requirements and specifications. General Manager of MPS Jeff Bullock said, “Of course we are proud, it hasn’t really sunk in yet, but to have our unique product accepted and used at that level is a great accolade and very satisfying for everyone”. The boost comes at an excellent time for MPS as they continue to follow up opportunities and contacts generated from METS 2011.
MPS manufacture a range of corrosion measuring and prevention products and in particular they have developed the patented composite alloy called anode that is increasingly used as an alternative to zinc. Maddox anodes are far less aggressive than zinc on your under water coatings and they do not attract and promote barnacles like zinc can. A Maddox anode will prevent wood rot and give the user up to 3 times the useful life of any other alternative anode.
The anode was developed over a 10 year period of trials and testing and is now used by some prominent names in European, Australian and New Zealand boat building and is making real head way with private boat owners around the world. MPS product development focus is to simplify a commonly misunderstood topic and then make the best performing products possible.
